Deforestation occurs when forests are cleared by cutting or burning. They do this to for alternative uses, resources. One of these alternative uses is when there are too many people in one space, which is called overpopulation. Overpopulation happens when there are too many people in one place. So if there are forests around the land, they could cut them down and make more buildings for others. They also do this because they need more grazing land for their animals, agriculture. Sometimes they graze so much that there is no room for more trees to grow. They also do this for farming reasons. If humans don't have enough farmland, then they cut down trees to make more room for their crops. Deforestation causes global warming. Global warming is where the atmosphere's climate keeps rising.
- Planting subsistence crops (60%)
- Logging for paper, building timber and fuel (22%)
- Commercial farming & grazing land for cattle (11%)
How Does This Effect Our Four Spheres?
Deforestation causes global warming. Global warming is where the atmosphere's climate keeps rising. Trees contain a lot of carbon dioxide,CO2, which is not good for us because we breathe oxygen, right? So if there is more carbon dioxide in the air than oxygen, then this could cause a big problem for us. Even though plants also harbor carbon dioxide too, trees store up to 100 times more carbon dioxide than plants.
When people cut down trees, they are making less oxygen for us to breathe. which will also cause breathing difficulties. So even though there are many reasons to cut down trees... there are better reasons not to. The more trees you cut down the less oxygen we have left to breathe. The burning of the forests causes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and other trace gases to be released into the atmosphere. Deforestation causes air pollution. When people burn the forest, forest fire, smoke is released into the atmosphere.
Deforestation also effects the water cycle. The trees extract, absorb, groundwater through it's roots. Then releases it into the atmosphere as water vapor. Without forests this wouldn't happen, and soon that land will become desert like. Tropical rain forests contains 30% of Earth's fresh water. 99% of the water absorbed by the tree's roots, are moved up into the trees leaves, and are turned into water vapor. Deforestation also causes water loss. How? Well since trees suck in a lot of groundwater and releases it into the air as water vapor. When the trees get cut/burned down, there is nothing to release water vapor into the air. This causes the air and land to dry out. It also causes water to evaporate.Deforestation causes water pollution. If there are no trees, when it rains the water washes the soil away. The soil then travels until it reaches a stream, river, lake, sea,or an ocean. Soil contains some chemicals which are bad for the water. This will cause us to have even less fresh water than we already have.
Undisturbed forests have a very low rate of landslides, soil loss. So taking away trees by towns or villages, could cause landslides by that community. Those landslides would cause many people to die. Also deforestation causes many animals to loss there homes, habitat. 80% of animals live in tropical rain forests. Many of these animals become endangered or extinct. According to research, we are losing 137 plants, animals, and insect species every day because of deforestation. Which is about 50,000 species that are lost per year. More than 40% of animal and plant species in Southeast Asia could be wiped out in the 21st century. The trees also protect the land from harmful sun rays. This will also cause the land to become desert like. As you can see deforestation effects everything in our environment. Our atmosphere(all the gases in the air), hydrosphere(all the water in every form), biosphere(all living things), lithosphere(Earth's crust, ground).
